The Selkirk Common Good Fund Sub Committee met on Thursday 04 June 2026 to discuss financial reports, a grant application, and matters relating to local land use and tree management. The meeting was scheduled to review the financial performance of the fund for the past year and consider the draft budget for the upcoming year.
Monitoring Report and Draft Budget
The committee was scheduled to consider the Monitoring Report for the 12 months ending 31 March 2026 and the Draft Budget for 2026/27. This report, prepared by the Director of Finance, Suzy Douglas, provides details of the income and expenditure for the Selkirk Common Good Fund. It outlines the financial position of the fund, including projected income and expenditure for the next three financial years. The report indicates a projected deficit balance for the coming years, which is expected to be impacted by anticipated demolition works at Linglie Farm. The committee was asked to note the actual and forecast income and expenditure, agree the draft budget for 2026/27, and note the grants distributed and the current position of the Aegon Asset Management Investment Fund. A recommendation was made to request officers to present a medium to long-term forecast that includes the costs for Linglie Farm.
Application for Financial Assistance: Selkirk Silver Band
An application for financial assistance from the Selkirk Silver Band was scheduled for consideration. The band was seeking £2,000 towards the cost of attending the National Brass Band Championship of Great Britain 2026 in York. The report pack detailed the band's activities, their recent success in becoming Scottish Champions in the 3rd section, and the estimated costs associated with their participation in the national championships. The application highlighted the community benefits of the band's participation, including representing the Scottish Borders and Scotland, and providing opportunities for young musicians. The band's own fundraising efforts and previous funding received from the Common Good Fund were also outlined.
Tree Condition Survey and Risk Assessment: Sentry Knowe, Selkirk
The committee was to consider a Tree Condition Survey and Risk Assessment for trees on land at Sentry Knowe, Selkirk. The report, prepared by TD Tree & Land Services, assessed the health, structural condition, and risk posed by the trees. The survey identified three mature stems forming a cohesive group, along with two younger trees. While the mature trees showed signs of historic damage, these defects displayed good woundwood development, indicating appropriate physiological responses. The younger trees, however, had sustained recent vandalism. The assessment concluded that no immediate tree work was necessary, but recommended re-inspection within three to five years, depending on site usage, to monitor the trees' condition.
Land Use Request: Victoria Park, Selkirk
A request for land use was scheduled for discussion concerning Victoria Park, Selkirk. T. Hiscoe & Sons had applied to operate a funfair at the park from 8 June to 15 June 2026.
Woodland Management Plan
The committee was also scheduled to receive initial findings and recommendations from a Woodland Consultant, Mr Stephen Adlard, regarding the Selkirk Common Good woodlands.
