Current Project Update

'Friends of the Chambers Institution' Update

Gareth Smith, the newly appointed chair of the 'Friends of the Chambers Institution', provided an update on the group's activities. He reported that the three current trustees – himself, Councillor Marshall Douglas, and David Robertson – have held two preliminary board meetings. During these meetings, they agreed that Gareth Smith would continue as chair and observer on the Chambers Institution Trust. They also discussed the way forward and identified immediate actions, including setting up a bank account and reviewing a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Chambers Institution Trust. The MOU is nearing finalisation and is intended as a starting point for cooperation, specifically for Phase 1 and its fundraising requirements. It is anticipated that the MOU will evolve as further roles and responsibilities are agreed in relation to the business plan. The next steps for the 'Friends' include gathering membership and expanding the board with additional trustees and co-optees. A presence is also expected at the forthcoming public consultation.

Phase 2 Feasibility Study and Business Plan

The meeting moved into a private session to discuss and potentially agree on the Phase 2 feasibility study and business plan. This discussion was expected to lead to the launch of the public consultation stage for the next phase of the project. The public consultation is planned to take place over two dates: the afternoon and evening of Monday, 13 May, and Saturday, 16 May, from approximately 10 am to 4 pm. Both events are scheduled to be held at the Borough Hall.
