Summary
The Severnside Area Forum of Monmouthshire Council met on Thursday, 13 June 2024, to discuss several key issues, including the development of a new community centre, the Gypsy and Traveller site allocation, and local transport improvements. Decisions were made on the community centre's location and the allocation of funds for transport projects.
New Community Centre Development
The forum discussed the development of a new community centre in Caldicot. The proposed site is the former Caldicot Comprehensive School grounds. The decision to proceed with this location was made after considering several factors, including accessibility, space, and community feedback. Councillor Paul Convery highlighted the importance of the centre for local residents, stating:
This new community centre will serve as a vital hub for Caldicot, providing much-needed facilities and fostering a sense of community.1
Gypsy and Traveller Site Allocation
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to discussing the allocation of sites for Gypsy and Traveller communities. The Gypsy and Traveller Briefing note was reviewed, outlining potential sites and the criteria used for selection. The forum acknowledged the need for suitable and sustainable locations, with Councillor Jane Pratt emphasising:
We must ensure that the sites we allocate are not only compliant with legal requirements but also meet the needs of the Gypsy and Traveller communities.2
No final decision was made, and further consultations are planned.
Local Transport Improvements
The forum also discussed local transport improvements, focusing on enhancing connectivity and safety. The allocation of funds for these projects was approved, with priority given to upgrading bus routes and improving road safety measures in Magor. Councillor Sara Jones noted:
Investing in our transport infrastructure is crucial for the economic development of the region and the well-being of our residents.3
Other Topics
Other topics discussed included the maintenance of local parks and the implementation of new waste management policies. These discussions were brief and no major decisions were made.
