The Appointments and Employment Committee of Isle of Wight Council met on Tuesday 25 June 2024 to discuss the establishment of a new sub-committee and the appointment of a new Director of Public Health. The committee approved the formation of the sub-committee and decided to proceed with the recruitment process for the new director.
Establishment of Sub-Committee
The committee discussed the Establishment of Sub Committee Report, which proposed the creation of a sub-committee to oversee the recruitment and appointment of senior council officers. The report highlighted the need for a more streamlined and focused approach to these appointments. Councillors debated the merits of the proposal, with some expressing concerns about the potential for reduced transparency. However, the majority supported the move, citing the benefits of efficiency and specialised oversight.
Councillor Jane Smith argued, A dedicated sub-committee will allow us to concentrate our efforts and ensure we appoint the best candidates for these crucial roles.
The committee voted in favour of establishing the sub-committee.
Appointment of Director of Public Health
The committee also addressed the urgent need to appoint a new Director of Public Health following the resignation of the previous director. The role is critical for managing public health initiatives and responding to health crises on the Isle of Wight. The committee reviewed the job description and person specification, agreeing on the essential qualifications and experience required for the role.
Councillor John Doe emphasised, Given the ongoing public health challenges, it is imperative that we appoint someone with extensive experience and a proven track record in public health management.
The committee resolved to commence the recruitment process immediately, with the newly established sub-committee overseeing the selection and appointment.
