The Ordinary Council meeting on Wednesday 26 June 2024 saw the appointment of new leadership roles, the establishment of committees, and the approval of the committee calendar for the upcoming municipal year. Key decisions included the election of Councillor Mark Haigh as Mayor and Councillor Jay Laplain as Deputy Mayor for the 2024/2025 term.
Appointment of Mayor for Municipal Year 2024/2025
Councillor Mark Haigh was unanimously elected as Mayor for the 2024/2025 municipal year. Councillor Barrett moved the nomination, which was seconded by Councillor Aspinell. The decision was made in accordance with the statutory duty outlined in Appendix B of the Council's Constitution.
Appointment of Deputy Mayor for Municipal Year 2024/2025
Councillor Jay Laplain was unanimously appointed as Deputy Mayor for the 2024/2025 municipal year. The nomination was moved by Councillor Dr Barrett and seconded by Councillor Haigh. This appointment is also a statutory duty.
Brentwood Borough Council Elections
The results of the recent elections were published within the agenda. Newly elected members include Councillors Baldock, Chinnery, Cloke, Gibson, Gordon, Jerrard, Patel, and Sunger. Re-elected members were also congratulated.
Political Groups on the Council
The Chief Executive, Jonathan Stephenson, reported the receipt of notices from the Conservative Group and the Brentwood Joint Administration Group, indicating their wish to be treated as political groups on the Council. This compliance is in accordance with the Local Government (Committees and Political Groups) Regulations 1990.
Designate a Leader and Deputy Leader of the Council
Councillor Aspinell was designated as Leader of the Council, while Councillors Davies and Dr Barrett were designated as Deputy Leaders. These appointments comply with Article 4 of the Council's Constitution.
Committees and their Terms of Reference
The Council established its committees for the 2024/2025 municipal year, agreeing on their size and terms of reference. The recommendations were moved by Councillor Aspinell and seconded by Councillor Dr Barrett. The Terms of Reference were agreed upon to facilitate effective governance.
Political Balance, Allocation of Committee Seats and Committee Appointments
The Council approved the allocation of seats on committees, received nominations from political groups, and appointed chairs and vice-chairs of committees. An amended appendix detailing the allocation of seats was tabled during the meeting.
Committee Calendar for 2024-2025
The Council approved the calendar of meetings for the 2024/2025 municipal year. The calendar, which was subject to the establishment of committees, was moved by Councillor Aspinell and seconded by Councillor Dr Barrett. The approved calendar ensures effective and efficient decision-making throughout the year.
