The Director of Place at Newham Council made a decision to proceed with the next stage of the Romford Road Active Travel scheme. The Director decided to approve the detailed design of the scheme between Woodgrange Road and Richmond Road subject to several conditions. No objections were received during a consultation on the scheme.

Romford Road Active Travel Scheme: Section D South (Woodgrange Road to Richmond Road)

The meeting considered a report on the next stage of the Romford Road Active Travel scheme. The scheme will be delivered in several sections. This decision was about Section D South, which runs between Woodgrange Road and Richmond Road. The report asked the Director of Place to approve the detailed design of the scheme.

The report set out the results of a consultation on the scheme that ran between 8 February 2024 and 10 March 2024.

A total of 151 responses were received. Of those that expressed a preference (n=148), 81% were supportive or partially supportive.

The scheme was felt to have a positive impact on air quality and road danger.

The scheme is anticipated to reduce exposure to air pollution along Romford Road... [and] will introduce a new continuous footway level cycle track which is anticipated to reduce collisions along the corridor and encourage higher levels of active travel.

The detailed design of the scheme was included in the meeting pack. The scheme will make the existing cycle lane, which is currently just painted on the road, into a cycle track that is physically separated from the road by a kerb. The scheme will also make changes to the width of the road at several junctions to slow traffic.

The Director of Place resolved to approve the detailed design of the scheme, subject to three conditions. These conditions related to the location of cycle parking spaces and the design of the scheme at the junction with Shrewsbury Road.
