June 24, 2024 View on council websiteSummary
The Barrow in Furness Local Area Planning Committee of Westmorland and Furness Council met on Monday 24 June 2024 to discuss several key planning applications and policy updates. Significant decisions included the approval of the South End Caravan Park expansion and the rejection of a proposed retail development on Duke Street.
South End Caravan Park Expansion
The committee approved the expansion of South End Caravan Park, which includes the addition of 50 new pitches. The decision followed a detailed review of the South End Caravan Park application and supplementary documents, such as the Statement South End Caravan Park - Extra Info and Southend Caravan Park Proposed Mitigation Measures - Extra Info.
Councillors debated the potential environmental impact and the economic benefits of the expansion. Proponents argued that the expansion would boost local tourism and create jobs. One councillor noted, The economic uplift from increased tourism cannot be understated, especially in a post-pandemic recovery phase.
Opponents raised concerns about increased traffic and environmental degradation. Ultimately, the committee decided that the proposed mitigation measures were sufficient to address these concerns.
Duke Street Retail Development
A proposed retail development on Duke Street was rejected. The application aimed to convert a vacant lot into a shopping complex. Councillors expressed concerns about the impact on existing local businesses and the potential for increased traffic congestion. One councillor remarked, We must consider the viability of our current high street shops before introducing new competition.
The decision aligns with the council's previous statements on supporting local businesses and maintaining the character of Barrow in Furness. The rejection was unanimous, reflecting a strong consensus on prioritising the needs of existing retailers.
Local Area Planning Committees Terms of Reference
The committee also reviewed and updated the LOCAL AREA PLANNING COMMITTEES TERMS OF REFERENCE. The revisions aim to streamline decision-making processes and enhance community engagement. The updated terms of reference will be implemented immediately.
Other Business
Several minor planning applications were discussed and approved without significant debate. These included residential extensions and small-scale commercial projects. The committee also confirmed the minutes of the previous meeting held on 9 April 2024, as documented in the Barrow LAPC Mins 09.04.24.
