The Licensing Committee considered an application for a Temporary Event Notice (TEN) at Deptford Market Yard, and decided to refuse permission for the event to go ahead.
Deptford Market Yard, Carriage Way, SE8 4BX
The Committee considered an application for a Temporary Event Notice for the sale of alcohol on and off the premises and the provision of regulated entertainment at Deptford Market Yard on 10 August 2025 between 09:50 and 22:00. The event was to be a street party in celebration of Jamaican independence, with food and drink stalls, folk singers and dancers, and DJs playing Jamaican music.
The application, which was submitted by Owen Baker, was for a capacity of 300 people.
The Police Licensing Team objected to the application on the grounds of the prevention of crime and disorder, public safety, and public nuisance.
The Police representative, PC Gillian Pearce, told the meeting that a similar event had taken place the previous year, after an initial objection by the police was withdrawn. However, there had been a number of issues associated with the previous event.
The police then removed their objection.
Police received a report of a stabbing after last years event: 01/707548/24 - 11/08/2024 - , Douglas Way SE8 – Male single stab wound to lower back refusing to go to hospital Police also received a complaint the organiser had demanded £400 money from one of the shops close to the event. This was to pay for the porta loos and he allegedly stated that he would burn down the shop if he did not receive it. The organiser was apparently intoxicated.
Shops closed earlier than normal as they felt intimidated by the crowds.
There were apparently no SIA at the event. Police also received reports the event went on until 3am. Although on checking CCTV we were unable to prove or disprove this as the CCTV cameras were facing away from the event and it is possible that further after parties took place away from the initial event. Appendix 2 - Objection from police
The Committee decided to issue a counter notice, meaning that the event could not go ahead as planned.
