The Council Assembly met to discuss the award of Freedoms of the Borough. The Council resolved to agree the recommendations for the award, although the names of the people or organisations to receive the honour were discussed in private and are not public knowledge. The meeting started at 9pm and finished at 10.30pm.
Freedoms of the Borough 2025
The Council considered a report on the nominations received for the Freedom of the Borough.
The Freedom of the Borough is the highest award that Southwark Council can bestow. It is awarded to persons of distinction who have rendered eminent services to the borough
, and can be awarded to individuals or organisations.
The process for awarding the Freedom of the Borough is set out in the Council's constitution. Nominations are considered by the Constitutional Steering Panel, which then makes recommendations to a specially convened meeting of the full Council.
The Council noted that it had received a number of nominations for the award of Freedom of the Borough, which were listed in a closed report. The Council also noted that the ceremony for the presentation of the Freedom of the Borough would take place at Southwark Cathedral on Saturday 17 May 2025. The Council resolved to agree the nominations for the award of Freedom of the Borough, as set out in the closed report.
