The Newport Council Cabinet meeting on 19 June 2024 focused on key issues including corporate safeguarding, the annual report from the Director of Social Services, and the treasury management outturn report for the financial year 2023/24. Corporate Safeguarding Report
Councillor Laura Lacey presented the Corporate Safeguarding Report, emphasising the council's commitment to safeguarding children and adults at risk. The report, now in its seventh year, outlines the council's efforts to ensure all staff and volunteers are aware of safeguarding protocols. It covers mandatory compliance and aims to improve reporting data. Councillor Lacey stated:
The report evidences what city council are doing to ensure that all staff know and understand how to identify and report safeguarding concerns they may have.
The Cabinet approved the report, acknowledging its importance in maintaining high safeguarding standards across all council services.
Director of Social Services Annual Report
Councillor Laura Lacey also presented the Director of Social Services Annual Report, which is a statutory requirement under the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014. The report assesses the performance of social services over the past year, highlighting case studies and staff contributions. One notable case study involved creating a safe garden area for a four-year-old boy with autism and PICA, a condition involving the compulsive swallowing of non-food items. Councillor Lacey noted:
The applicants provided excellent feedback explaining that they were extremely happy with the contractor and the service provided.
The Cabinet noted the report, recognising the dedication and hard work of social services staff.
Treasury Management Outturn Report
The Treasury Management Outturn Report for 2023/24 was presented, detailing the council's borrowing and investment activities. The report outlines compliance with prudential indicators and provides an outlook for the upcoming financial year. The Cabinet noted the report, which will be presented to the full council for approval.
Work Programme
The Cabinet accepted the work programme for the upcoming year, outlining key areas of focus and planned activities.
