Derbyshire County Council is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, 10 December 2025, to conduct formal business. The agenda includes prayers, apologies for absence, declarations of interest, and a proposal to appoint Honorary Aldermen and Alderwomen. The meeting will be available via webcast on the council's website and YouTube Channel.
Appointment of Honorary Alderman and Alderwoman
The council is scheduled to consider a proposal to confer the title of Honorary Alderman or Alderwoman on several former councillors. According to the report pack, at a meeting on 8 October 2025, the council nominated former Councillors David Allen, Barry Bingham, Jean Innes, Barry Lewis, Ron Mihaly, Robert Parkinson and Simon Spencer for this honour.
The council will consider a resolution to formally recognise these individuals for their service. According to the Public Reports Pack, to confer the honorary title, the council must pass a resolution with a two-thirds majority of the members present at the meeting.
The Local Government Act 1972 enables a principal council to confer the title of honorary aldermen or honorary alderwomen on persons who have, in the opinion of the Council rendered eminent service as past members.
If the resolution is passed, the names of the appointed Aldermen and Alderwomen will be added to the Roll of Honorary Aldermen and Honorary Alderwomen held by the Monitoring Officer. They will also be presented with a badge of office.
The title of Honorary Alderman or Alderwoman comes with certain privileges, including:
- The courtesy title of Honorary Alderman or Honorary Alderwoman
- Receiving a copy of the summons to Council meetings
- Being invited to take part in civic events
- Being nominated to sit on outside bodies where a serving Elected Member is not required
- Being entitled to attend meetings of the Council
- Being allocated a seat in the Council Chamber.
The Appointment of Honorary Alderman and Alderwoman report states the reasons for the recommendation:
To formally recognise those individuals who have rendered eminent service as past members.
To comply with the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972, conferring the title of Alderman and Alderwoman, needs to be approved at a specially convened meeting of full Council.
