The Harlow and Gilston Garden Town Joint Committee met to discuss the Harlow and Gilston Garden Town (HGGT) project, including progress on key projects and financial updates. The committee also considered the adoption of a new Sustainable Transport Strategy.
Sustainable Transport Strategy
The committee was scheduled to discuss and potentially adopt the new HGGT Sustainable Transport Strategy. The strategy sets out a vision for a transport network that supports sustainable growth, reduces reliance on private cars, and promotes active travel1.
Key elements of the strategy include:
- Walking and Cycling: Creating safe and attractive routes for pedestrians and cyclists, connecting communities and key destinations.
- Public Transport: Enhancing bus and rail services to provide viable alternatives to car travel.
- Demand Management: Implementing measures to discourage car use, such as parking restrictions and congestion charging.
- Technology and Innovation: Exploring the use of new technologies, such as electric vehicles and smart transport systems, to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.
The strategy also identifies a number of priority projects, including the development of a new rapid transit system and the creation of a network of green corridors.
Harlow and Gilston Garden Town Programme Update
The committee was scheduled to receive an update on the overall progress of the HGGT programme. This included updates on the delivery of new homes, infrastructure projects, and community facilities. The Harlow and Gilston Garden Town is a major development project that aims to create a new community with up to 23,000 homes, as well as new jobs, schools, and other amenities. The project is being led by a partnership of local authorities, including Harlow Council, East Herts Council, and Epping Forest District Council.
Financial Update
The committee was scheduled to review the financial performance of the HGGT programme, including expenditure to date and projected future costs. This included consideration of funding from central government, local authorities, and private developers.
