The Strategic Sites Committee of Buckinghamshire Council is scheduled to meet on Thursday 19 March 2026. The meeting's agenda includes discussions on proposed changes to planning permissions at Spade Oak Quarry, Little Marlow, and the creation of a Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace (SANG) at the same location.
Spade Oak Quarry: Variation of Planning Conditions
The committee is set to consider two applications related to Spade Oak Quarry, located on Marlow Road, Little Marlow, Buckinghamshire, SL7 3SB.
The first application, CM/0010/25, concerns a variation of conditions attached to a previous planning permission (W/97/7079) for sand and gravel extraction. The proposed changes aim to amend the time limit for the cessation of extraction and removal of plant and machinery, modify the approved restoration plan, and remove part (c) of Condition 19. The report pack indicates that the applicant, Buckinghamshire Council, is seeking to extend the completion time for restoration works to 31st July 2027. This application is being brought before the committee as the Council is the applicant and the site is proposed for use as a Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace (SANG) linked to major housing development allocated in the local plan.
The second application, CM/0011/25, seeks permission for the creation of infrastructure to facilitate the use of land at Spade Oak Quarry as a SANG. This includes proposals for a car park with 25 spaces (including accessible bays), footpaths, signage, bins, information boards, and a bird hide. The report suggests that this SANG is intended to mitigate the impact of nearby residential developments, such as the proposed Hollands Farm development, on the Burnham Beeches Special Area of Conservation (SAC). The proposal aims to provide an alternative recreational space to divert visitors away from the sensitive SAC. The report indicates that the development would provide a 10% increase in Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG).
Both applications are accompanied by extensive reports detailing site descriptions, policy considerations, ecological assessments, and consultation responses from various stakeholders, including Little Marlow Parish Council, Wild Marlow, and Natural England. The reports highlight concerns raised by some consultees regarding ecological impacts, restoration obligations, and public access.
