Following the change in government guidance in
relation to Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) in
schools on 31st August whereby any school buildings with
RAAC panel construction should immediately close until such time as
additional support has been installed to support the structure or
the RAAC element has been replaced, the council has agreed that the
Sands Centre events hall should close immediately in line with the
latest government advice. 

Reasons for the decision

Given the updated DfE advice for schools the
council is closing the Sands Centre events facility to ensure
public safety whilst further investigations are undertaken into
remedial measures required.  

Alternative options considered

To allow the events centre to remain
operational - rejected due to the serious health and safety
risk.
