Motion 4: Age Friendly Community

Decision Maker: Council

Outcome: Recommendations Approved

Is Key Decision?: No

Is Callable In?: No

Date of Decision: November 19, 2025

Purpose:

Content: RESOLVED: 1.      That this Council notes that the Centre for Ageing Better[1] is tackling inequalities in ageing, and that nationally over 100 local authorities work in collaboration with the centre focusing on improving the lives of older people through community projects, support for older volunteers, and addressing issues such as social isolation and digital exclusion. 2.      That this Council recognises: a)            That the Centre for Ageing Better is working to make all our workplaces, homes and communities inclusive of older people, as well as building an Age-Friendly Movement so that society sees ageing in a more positive and realistic way. b)            That if this work is carried out effectively, more of the residents of Milton Keynes can experience good health, financial security and be treated fairly and with respect as we grow older. 3.             That this council therefore asks the executive to officially register to become an Age-friendly Community[2] demonstrating the Council’s commitment to all our citizens of whatever age and acknowledging that the needs of older populations must be recognised and understood. 4.             That this Council notes Leeds City Council’s Age Friendly Leeds Strategy and Action Plan 2025-2030, which shows how working together with local organisations, health services, and older residents can make a real difference to people’s lives, by improving housing, transport, health, and community involvement for older people. 5.             That this Council therefore: a)      Asks the Executive to look at the Leeds approach and other good examples when developing Milton Keynes’ own age friendly plans. b)      Encourages close working with local community and voluntary groups, health partners, and older residents to create a local action plan that fits Milton Keynes. c)      Supports the idea that “age friendly” means welcoming and inclusive for everyone, helping to build stronger links between different generations and reduce loneliness across the city. [1]The Centre for Ageing Better is a UK-based charity that works to improve policy, services, and society so people can age well. It achieves this through research, campaigning, and projects, focusing on creating age-friendly communities, homes, and employment. The organization, which was established in 2015 and is funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, runs initiatives like the Age-friendly Employer Pledge and the Age without limits campaign to challenge ageism and support older people. [2]Over 100 local authorities are registered as age friendly local communities.
