Annual Report of the Director for Public Health 2025 - The Miracle Cure - Physical Activity For All
Decision Maker:
Outcome: Recommendations Approved
Is Key Decision?: No
Is Callable In?: No
Date of Decision: March 11, 2026
Purpose:
Content: Having been duly proposed and seconded, the Executive Resolved to endorse that:- The report was structured around the life course and different cohorts that we must consider which demonstrated that physical activity could both prevent and manage health conditions. The report identified three priorities for getting the Somerset population more active: · Short Term – Ageing Well The biggest priority currently was supporting adults over the age of 50 who were active for less than 30 minutes per week, to be more physically active and reduce sedentary behaviour so that they maintained strength and mobility into their later years · Medium Term – Reduce health inequalities Focus on reducing inequalities in physical activity by targeting groups (using Sport England inequality matrix) at greater risk of inactivity. This included communities in areas of deprivation and individuals with disabilities or protected characteristics who may face barriers to participation. · Long Term – Future Focus The long-term priority was to ensure that physical activity was initiated and sustained across the life course and efforts should focus on groups where activity levels dropped off or where participation didn’t start. The overarching message was - Physical activity must be embedded in our lives, in our communities and in our futures. Physical Activity opportunities in a neighbourhood could and should unite communities to come together and get more physically active at minimal cost. Bringing the opportunity of enormous gain, both physically and mentally. The detailed recommendations were listed within the report, these were designed to give the system partnership direction and a prioritisation framework.
