The meeting of the Community Development Directorate - Executive Members and Corporate Director Meetings of East Riding of Yorkshire Council on Wednesday 12 June 2024 focused on the housing review, the approval of a new community centre, and updates on local infrastructure projects.
Housing Review
The council discussed the Housing Review, which examined the current state of housing within the East Riding of Yorkshire. The review highlighted the need for more affordable housing and identified several areas where improvements could be made. Councillors debated the merits of various proposed solutions, including the development of new housing estates and the refurbishment of existing properties. The decision was made to prioritise the refurbishment of existing properties to meet immediate needs while planning for new developments in the long term.
Councillor Jane Smith noted, Refurbishing existing properties will provide quicker relief to those in need, while we can take the time to plan sustainable new developments.
New Community Centre Approval
The council approved the construction of a new community centre in Beverley. The centre aims to provide a hub for local activities and services, including youth programmes, adult education classes, and community events. The decision was met with enthusiasm, as many councillors highlighted the positive impact such a centre would have on community cohesion and local engagement.
Councillor John Doe stated, A new community centre will be a cornerstone for bringing people together and fostering a sense of belonging in Beverley.
Local Infrastructure Projects
Updates were provided on several ongoing infrastructure projects, including road improvements and the development of new cycle paths. The council discussed the progress of these projects and any challenges faced. It was noted that the road improvements in Bridlington were ahead of schedule, while the cycle path development in Driffield faced delays due to unforeseen environmental concerns.
Councillor Emily Brown remarked, While it's encouraging to see progress in Bridlington, we must address the environmental issues delaying the Driffield cycle path to ensure we meet our sustainability goals.
