Summary
The Licensing Committee of Belfast City Council met on Wednesday 19 June 2024 to discuss several key issues, including the renewal of a nightclub licence, the introduction of a new street trading policy, and the approval of a temporary event notice for a local festival. Decisions were made on all these matters, impacting local businesses and community events.
Renewal of Nightclub Licence
The committee discussed the renewal of the nightclub licence for The Limelight, a popular venue in Belfast. The renewal was granted despite concerns raised by local residents about noise levels and anti-social behaviour. The committee acknowledged these concerns but decided that the nightclub had taken sufficient measures to mitigate the issues.
Councillor John Smith stated, The Limelight has implemented several noise reduction strategies and increased security to address the concerns of the local community.
However, some residents felt these measures were inadequate. The committee ultimately decided to renew the licence, citing the venue's importance to the local nightlife economy.
New Street Trading Policy
A new street trading policy was introduced, aiming to regulate the number and location of street traders in Belfast. The policy includes provisions for designated trading zones and specific operating hours. The committee approved the policy, which will come into effect from 1 August 2024.
Councillor Mary O'Neill highlighted the benefits of the new policy: This policy will help to balance the needs of street traders with those of local businesses and residents. It will create a more organised and vibrant street trading environment.
Approval of Temporary Event Notice for Local Festival
The committee approved a temporary event notice for the Belfast Summer Festival, scheduled to take place from 15 to 17 July 2024 at Ormeau Park. The festival will feature live music, food stalls, and family-friendly activities. The approval was granted with conditions to ensure public safety and minimise disruption to the local area.
Councillor David Brown emphasised the importance of the festival: The Belfast Summer Festival is a key event in our city's cultural calendar. It brings together people from all walks of life and showcases the best of what Belfast has to offer.
