The Hackney Council's Children and Young People Scrutiny Commission met to discuss several key issues, including the lessons learned from a judicial review regarding children's centres, childcare sufficiency, and school inclusion. The commission also reviewed and agreed the minutes from the previous meeting on 22 July 2025 and discussed the commission's work programme for the remainder of the municipal year.

The Hackney Council Children and Young People Scrutiny Commission met to discuss changes to A-level provision at New City College, and to hear evidence on behaviour management and school inclusion from the National Association of Headteachers, the Mayor of London's Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) and local community organisations. The commission also agreed to add reviews of housing support for families of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), and improving outcomes for young black boys and girls to their work programme.

The Children and Young People's Scrutiny Commission met to discuss behaviour management and school inclusion, sexual and reproductive health services for young people, and the commission's work programme. The commission heard from Astrid Shun, head teacher at London East Alternative Provision Leap in Tower Hamlets, about behaviour management and school inclusion. Members also received an update on sexual and reproductive health services for young people in Hackney, following up on concerns raised at a previous meeting.

The Children and Young People Scrutiny Commission met to discuss behaviour management and school inclusion, the school estates strategy, and the work programme for the remainder of the municipal year. As part of the discussion on behaviour management, the commission was scheduled to hear from Mervin Cato, Head of Behaviour Support Service, Nexus & Anna Vaughan, Project Manager, Nexus (LB Enfield), Rob Williams, Senior Policy Adviser, National Association of Headteachers, and Jason Marantz, Director of Education & Inclusion, LB Hackney. The commission was also scheduled to note a response from Deputy Mayor Anntoinette Bramble, Cabinet member for Education, Young People and Children’s Social Care, regarding the School Estates & Education Sufficiency Strategy.

This meeting was the second evidence gathering session of the Commission's in-depth review of behaviour management and school inclusion in Hackney. The Commission received evidence from teaching unions and a written submission from the Department for Education. They also reviewed their work programme for the remainder of the year.
