About

North East Museums (formerly Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums) is governed by a Strategic Board which comprises between 10 and 15 members. Each Council in Tyneside and Northumberland provides two members from amongst its elected members, Newcastle University appoints one member, and there are up to four additional members who are independent appointments.   The Strategic Board meets a minimum of four times a year. The Chair is appointed for a term of three years and is an independent appointee. The two Vice-Chairs are appointed annually from amongst the elected members.   The Strategic Board was created to enable North East Museums to explore new ways of working and engaging with a wider sector; and to ensure a sustainable, resilient and positive future for North East Museums, particularly in light of significant reduction in public sector funding.   The Strategic Board’s key objective is to administer, maintain and develop North East Museums.   Certain decisions of the Strategic Board relating to the discharge of a statutory function are, at law, reserved to members who are Elected Members of the Constituent Councils. In relation to decisions made in relation to Reserved Matters, whilst the Independent and University Members may contribute fully in the debate leading up to such decision, all members recognise that, at law, only Reserved Matter Members can exercise a vote on such decision and be regarded as voting members of the Strategic Board. Those decisions will be clearly indicated on the Agenda.
