Newham has set up a
Standards Committee (formerly Standards Advisory Committee -
renamed Standards Committee at the Council’s Annual Council
Meeting held 22nd May 2025), comprising of five
independent people and four councillors. Further information is set out in Part 1 of the
Council’s
Constitution. The Standards
Advisory Committee has a number of functions, including the
consideration of any breaches of the Code of Conduct, promoting and
maintaining high standards of conduct, and advising the Council on
the adoption and revision of the Code of Conduct and the various
Protocols included in the Constitution.
Newham Council has
adopted a Code of Conduct in accordance with the Localism Act
2011. The Code of Conduct applies to
all Members (the Mayor and councillors) and Co-opted Members
whenever they are acting in an official capacity. The aim of the Code is to assist the Council in
providing excellent local government for the people of the borough
by setting out the principles which Members and Co-opted Members
are expected to follow. A copy of the
Code of Conduct is located in Part 5.1 of the Council’s
Constitution.
