West Sussex Local Nature Recovery Strategy - CAB12 (25/26)
From: Cabinet - Tuesday, 3 February 2026 10.30 am - February 03, 2026
The Environment Act 2021 introduced a statutory requirement for each upper-tier local authority to prepare and publish a Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS). LNRS are being introduced in England to encourage more coordinated practical and focused action and investment in nature. West Sussex County Council is the ‘responsible authority’ for preparing the West Sussex LNRS. The LNRS sets out a long-term vision for nature recovery, priority actions for the first five years (including opportunities for habitat creation, restoration of degraded sites, and improving ecological connectivity). It also provides a framework for delivering biodiversity net gain, climate resilience, and wider environmental benefits. The LNRS has been prepared in partnership with East Sussex County Council (which is preparing the East Sussex and Brighton & Hove LNRS), Brighton and Hove City Council, and Natural England. Preparation has also involved extensive engagement with key stakeholders, including the district and borough councils, the South Downs National Park Authority, landowners, farmers, conservation organisations, and community groups. The Cabinet will be asked to approve the West Sussex Local Nature Recovery Strategy.
