Annual Council

Annual Council - Thursday, 16th May, 2024 7.30 pm

Councillor Anjna Khurana was elected as Mayor of Islington for 2024/25, with Councillor Jason Jackson as her deputy. Outgoing Mayor, Councillor Gary Heather, was thanked for his service to the borough. Councillor Kaya Comer-Schwartz announced a refreshed Executive, with new responsibilities and some changes in personnel. The Council also approved a number of constitutional amendments relating to the operation of scrutiny, changes to the Members’ Allowances Scheme and procurement rules, and the membership and terms of reference for the Council’s committees.

The meeting made a total of four decisions. It approved a plan to amalgamate two primary schools, agreed a new Carers' Strategy, allocated a Public Health Grant and gave thanks to a retiring staff member.

Voluntary and Community Sector Committee - Monday, 25th March, 2024 6.30 pm

The Voluntary and Community Sector Committee of Islington Council met on Monday 25 March 2024 and agreed to continue the council's financial support of the Islington Community Chest small grants programme. The committee also made decisions on which organisations to award funding to from the Local Initiatives Fund, and on which organisations to offer free hire of the Islington Assembly Hall and Town Hall committee rooms to.

The Executive agreed to close Blessed Sacrament RC Primary School on 31 July 2024. The school is significantly under capacity, with a 64% vacancy rate and just six pupils in Reception.

Health and Wellbeing Board - Tuesday, 12th March, 2024 1.00 pm

The meeting noted a number of reports, including the annual reports for the Youth Counselling and Substance Misuse and Alcohol Service (YCSMAS), the Islington Safeguarding Adults Board (ISAB), and an update on the Combating Drugs Partnership. The Board also received a presentation on proposed changes to governance arrangements for health and wellbeing, prevention and early help activities in Islington.
