The Overview and Scrutiny Committee challenges decisions made by Bassetlaw District Council's Cabinet, which is responsible for most decision-making. It acts as a check and balance to ensure the council is run effectively and efficiently.

The committee can review decisions before they are implemented, investigate various topics by gathering evidence and hearing from witnesses, and conduct detailed reviews that result in reports and recommendations to the Cabinet. It also monitors the council's performance and has statutory duties related to crime and disorder, as well as responding to Councillor Calls for Action.
