Replacement of the Cascade Steps Landing Platform
August 26, 2026 Executive Director: Growth and Regeneration (Officer) Key decision Approved View on council websiteFull council record
Purpose
The landing stage at the Cascade Steps allows ferry operators to drop off and pick up passengers. It is also a popular area for the public to sit. The timber deck boards are end of life and have been breaking with increasing frequency over the past few years, such that they pose a public safety hazard and maintenance liability.
On 17 March 2026, the Harbour Committee unanimously voted in favour to approve the request to spend £900,000 to repair the defects found with Cascade Steps Landing Stage and Viewing Platform, allowing it continued unrestricted use by the ferry operators and public.
A procurement process has been undertaken through the Highways Asset Management and Civils Framework 2025-2029, Lot 8: Structural and Steel Maintenance, Repairs and Reconstruction Works to Bridges and Highway Retaining Wall Structures (contracts valued over £500,000, excluding VAT). It is proposed that Walters U.K. Limited be appointed under NEC Option E.
Decision
Approval to award a contract to Walters U.K Limited to repair the Cascade Steps Landing Stage and Viewing Platform
Alternative options considered
This is a well-used area of the Bristol Harbour and has been patched up in numerous places. Doing nothing is not an option, as there is a risk to the public of serious harm if the boards give way. Replacing the existing decking structure with new durable glass reinforced polymer (GRP) joists and decking is the most cost effective and long-lasting option.
