Purpose
This report sets out a proposed approach to the
re-procurement of Community Champions. The Community Champions
programme builds on the skills and knowledge of local communities,
by recruiting local people as volunteers to tackle inequalities,
improve health and wellbeing and address local issues of
concern.
This next phase of Community Champions would build on
successes of the current programme and grow the model from current
three to five neighbourhoods.
Community Champions in Camden have worked on a range of
local priority issues from improving physical activity, youth
safety, increasing vaccination uptake to raising awareness around
mental health issues. An external evaluation reporting in early
2024 found that the programmes have also served to develop
individual capabilities, confidence and leadership and enhance use
of community assets and public spaces.
The programme consists of 5 lots, one per
neighbourhood.
The programme will cost £300,000 per year
(£60,000 per neighbourhood), equal to £900,000 over
three years. This is funded from a number of sources, including the
Public Health Grant and Local Community Infrastructure Levy. We are
actively working with partners to explore other contributions
towards the programme which would reduce the funding required from
the Public Health Grant.
The procurement strategy report will subsequently be
presented to Kirsten Watters, Director of Health and Wellbeing for
approval in line with Contract Standing Orders.
