Purpose
This report seeks approval from the Chief Engineer, to implement
changes to the area north of Gordon Square, permanently closing the
street and making changes to the public realm to make the street
more attractive place to stop, rest and enjoy, to improve the local
environment and air quality by adding more planting.
The measures would include:
•
Closing the road in front of the University College London (UCL)
Institute of Archaeology to traffic (except cycling) using planters
and bollards between Gordon Street and Taviton Street.
•
Installing a two-way cycle lane for safe and easy cycling through
the area and to UCL.
•
Creating a new space for people to enjoy with plants, seating and
bike parking. Provision of auxiliary street furniture including a
small platform for exhibitions and social functions such as table
tennis or other games.
•
Biodiverse planting, sustainable furniture and incorporating
habitats for pollinating insects.
•
Changes to parking bays in the area, including removal of some
parking

THAT the Chief Engineer, having considered the proposals in
relation to the objectives set out in Camden Transport Strategy,
the public consultation results (Appendix C), the Equalities Impact
Assessment (Appendix B), and having due regard to the needs set out
in section 149 of the Equality Act 2010:
(i)
approves the implementation of proposed improvements
to the north of Gordon Square as set out in Section 2, subject to
compliance with relevant statutory
requirements;
(ii)
delegates to the Design Team Manager the authority to
take any further decisions required for this scheme.
