Purpose

This report seeks approval from the
Director of Environment and Sustainability under delegated
authority of the Cabinet Member for a Sustainable Camden; to
implement the final phases of the approved measures on the
‘Tavistock Place/Torrington Place corridor’, as
presented and agreed in the
Cabinet report approved on 13 November 2019, in line
with current funding availability. The delegated authority set out
above was also set out in that cabinet report.
 
The prioritised measures being brought
forward in this report for implementation include junction
improvements for cyclists and pedestrians at the Bedford Way /
Gordon Square / Tavistock Square junction, Woburn Place / Tavistock
Place junction, Marchmont Street / Tavistock Place
junction, Judd Street / Tavistock Place junction, Gower Street/
Torrington Place and upgraded protection to the cycle lanes between
Judd Street and Tottenham Court Road. These measures follow a
previous set of schemes that have already been delivered, again as
approved in the Cabinet report, as shown
here.
 
The recommended decisions are in line with the objectives
set out in We Make Camden, enabling people to choose healthy and
sustainable travel options.

THAT the Director of Environment and Sustainability, in
consultation with the Cabinet Member for a Sustainable Camden
having considered the proposals in relation to the objectives set
out in the Camden Transport Strategy, the Equality Impact
Assessment attached as Appendix I and summarised in section 4 of
this report and having due regard to the needs set out in section
149 of the Equality Act 2010:
1. Gives approval to proceed with the implementation of the
scheme as recommended in Option 2 (at Section 3) of this report,
subject to detailed design and compliance with statutory
processes;
2. Delegates to the Chief Engineer, in consultation with the
Director of Environment and Sustainability, the authority to take
any further decisions in order to progress the scheme.
