To notify the Government that Cumberland
Council wishes to join the Devolution Priority Programme.

Reasons for the decision

The Government has set out its intention to
widen and deepen devolution across England by publishing the
English Devolution White Paper (EDWP) on 16 December 2024.

Alternative options considered

Join the Devolution Priority Programme,
leading to the commencement of a Government led consultation on
creation of a Mayoral Strategic Authority, noting a final decision
will require further decision-making by the Council in autumn 2025.
This is the preferred option as it will put Cumberland in an
advantageous position and create the opportunity for additional
funding and growth.

Do not join the Devolution Priority Programme.
This option has been rejected as Cumberland would not have the
chance to benefit from the opportunities which may be offered
should devolution by ultimately agreed.
