Purpose
NOTICE is hereby given that East Sussex County
Council have made an Order under Section 84 (1) and (2) of the Road
Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended, and of all other enabling
powers, which will reduce the speed limit in the following lengths
of road;
Decision
20 mph Speed Limit
C39 Whiteway - From a point 41 metres east of its junction with
Cuckmere Road, eastwards to its junction with the C39 High
Street.
C39 High Street, C39 Waterloo Square, U7726 Waterloo Square and
U7125 River Lane - For their entire lengths.
C39 North Street - From its junction with the C39 Waterloo Square
to a point 7.5 metres southwest of the southwestern kerb line at
the access road to The Willows car park.
U7728 Weavers Lane, U7728 Star Lane, U7728 Kings Ride, U7728 Deans
Road, U7728 Smugglers Close, U7728 The Broadway, U7728 The
Furlongs, U7728 Cuckmere Court, U7728 Saffron Gardens, U7728 North
Road and U7727 Sloe Lane - For their entire adopted lengths.
U7726 West Street - From its junction with the C39 Waterloo Square
to a point 20 metres northwest of the northern boundary of the
property known as “Sloe Cottage”.
30 mph Speed Limit
C39 North Street – From a point 41 metres south of its
junction with Lullington Road, southwards to a point 7.5 metres
southwest of the southwestern kerb line at the access road to The
Willows car park.
C39 Whiteway - From a point 41 metres east of its junction with
Cuckmere Road to a point 268 metres south of its junction with
Cuckmere Road.
40 mph Speed Limit
C39 Whiteway - From a point 268 metres south of its junction with
Cuckmere Road to the north-eastern boundary of the property known
as “West Hill Cottages”.
A copy of the Order, which will come into effect on 21 July 2025,
plan showing the length of road and a statement of the County
Council’s reasons for proposing the Order, along with a copy
of the Order being revoked can be viewed in Reception, East Sussex
County Council, County Hall, St Anne’s Crescent, Lewes from
Monday to Friday between 9am to 4pm and online at;

Any person wishing to question the validity of the Order or any of
its provisions on the grounds that it is not within the powers
conferred by the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, or on the
grounds that any requirement of the Road Traffic Regulation Act or
of any instrument made under it has not been complied with in
relation to the Order, may within six weeks of 18 July 2025, apply
to the High Court for this purpose.
