Procurement of body removal services for H M Coroner
July 27, 2026 Deputy Director Law & Governance - Karen McIlwaine (Other) Approved View on council websiteFull council record
Purpose
Approval to start a procurement process to secure body removal services to ensure continuity of service when the current contacts cease on 31 May 2027.
Decision
For the reasons set out in this report, it is recommended to:
1) Approve the commencement of a procurement process to identify a supplier/suppliers to provide removal services for a period of three (3) years, commencing on the 1st of June 2027 at an estimated cost of £165,000 (ex. VAT) per annum.
Alternative options considered
Do nothing and continue with current contract – the contract will expire on 31 May 2027 and continuing to use this contract beyond that point would not be compliant with procurement legislation and would therefore put the Council at risk of challenge.
Do nothing and cease service – this would not meet the statutory duty placed on the Council and leave H M Coroner open to judicial review and the Council subject to action by the Justice Secretary.
