Decision

To award a works contract to Hinko
Construction Ltd for the reconstruction of Beggars Wife North
Bridge. The contract is a NEC4 ECC Option A contract for a sum of
£159,198.15.

Reasons for the decision

Beggars Wife North is in poor condition, the
construction being a filler deck making maintenance and improvement
the steel beams very difficult. A lack of drawings makes this more
difficult.

The decision to replace the deck has allowed the removal of the
central pier which removes an obstruction from the
watercourse.

Use of stainless steel reinforcement here will reduce the risk of
corrosion and deterioration of the structure.

Alternative options considered

Insitu repairs would have been more difficult
to carry out and potentially involved removing most of the deck
anyway.

Removing the structure completely, was discounted due to services
in the bridge deck and the bridge being an important part of the
local highway network in Giggleswick.

Other forms of construction would have been resulted in thicker
construction depths which would require a change in road levels of
lower soffit with an impact on flood risk.
