Void Management Strategy
January 26, 2026 Executive Member for Culture, Arts & Housing (Cabinet member) Key decision Approved View on council websiteFull council record
Purpose
To approve the Void Management Strategy, which
sets out North Yorkshire Council’s approach to managing its
empty council houses. The strategy ensures legal compliance, tenant
safety and consistent service delivery.
Decision
That the Executive Member approves the
adoption of the Void Management Strategy.
Reasons for the decision
The report details that a unified Void
Management Strategy will ensure fair and consistent handling of
void properties. It resolves past inconsistencies, aligns with
regulations and the Regulator of Social Housing’s Consumer
Standards. It aims to improve service, reduce risks and support
accountability.
Alternative options considered
Not to consolidate void management principles
and priorities into one single strategy was considered and ruled
out as this would severely limit our ability to deliver compliance,
consistency, and long-term improvement across the housing
portfolio.??
