Purpose
To approve the final extension of the Dementia Support and Advice Service contract for a two-year period commencing on 1 April 2027.
Decision
Approval has been given for the extension of the Dementia Support and Advice Service contract for a two-year period commencing on 1 April 2027.
Reasons for the decision
The Dementia Support and Advice service is a well-established and trusted service. It provides valued preventative support for people living with dementia and their carers; increases wider understanding and plays a key role in strategic development. Extending the contract for the final two years will allow the continuation of a well-performing service and provide a strong evidence base to inform future recommissioning.
The service supports an average of 93 new referrals per month and as of June 2026 is providing ongoing support to over 8643 people (those living with dementia and their carers). Evaluation shows positive impact with 100% of wellbeing/brain health café attendees reporting improved wellbeing and that attending has helped them develop a good support network. Whilst 99% of people felt better able to cope/manage their caring responsibilities after a home visit.
Alternative options considered
Extending the service for this final two years of the contract will allow continuation of the current delivery of the service with no disruption to individuals accessing the support. The contract has scope to use this natural extension. Re-procurement is not required as the service is not under performing, nor does the specification require a material change. Failure to extend the service could result in service cessation, leaving people without support and increasing pressure on statutory services.
