Council Policy on Gambling Related Harms in the Workplace.

Decision

Decision(s):

(1)

the new Council Policy and associated Guidance
document on Gambling Related Harms in the Workplace be approved;
and

(2)

the wider work for the Council to attain the
Beacon Counselling Trust Workplace Charter to Reduce Gambling
Related Harm be acknowledged.

Reason(s) for the
Decision(s):

As an employer, the Council has a legal
responsibility to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of its
workforce. Gambling related harm is a recognised medical condition,
which disproportionately impacts some groups. However, while an
estimated 85% businesses have workplace drug and alcohol policies
in place, fewer than 5% have gambling policies.

The current work will raise awareness of
gambling harms in the workplace and put procedures in place to
support employees who are experiencing gambling harms. This
approach is also endorsed by the UK Gambling Commission.
