Purpose

To seek approval to
introduce a new fee for unattended (direct) cremations of
£280 on a 3-month trial basis commencing 1st
January 2026, to enhance competitiveness with neighbouring
crematoria, attract additional bookings, and support residents
seeking lower-cost funeral options.
 
The current
cremation numbers across Sefton are low due to varying factors such
as the drop in the national death rate and cremations going to
other providers due to cost and facility options.

direct cremation fee for unattended (direct) cremations of
£280 for SAFE and NEFD members, be noted.

(2) 
The trial period: for 3 months from
January 2026 to March 2026, with monthly monitoring of activity and
income, be noted.
(3) 
That officers provide a review report at
the end of the trial period setting out findings, financial
implications, and a recommendation on whether to make the revised
fee permanent, be noted.
