Purpose

To obtain Cabinet Member approval for the implementation of the revised Probationary Policy.

Decision

Decision(s):

  1. The approved implementation of the revised Probationary Policy be noted.

Reasons for the recommendation:

Following approval of the revised Probationary Policy, the policy will be published and take effect after the expiry of the Cabinet Member decision call-in period. It will apply to all employees commencing employment from that date, while existing probationary cases will continue to be managed under the current policy. A revised written statement of employment particulars (Employee Handbook) will be implemented at the same time.

Alternative options considered and rejected:

The Council has considered several other options, including not amending the policy and various lengths of probationary periods.  However, a three-month probationary period was considered the most appropriate to enable the Council, and employee, to address any identified issues and comply with notice periods, where necessary.
