Increasing protections for High Street ATMs (Automated Teller Machines)
August 19, 2024 Head of Transformation and People (Officer) Approved View on council websiteFull council record
Purpose
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority Shared
Prosperity Funding (SPF) has been allocated to, and approved for,
this project with criteria for the funding stipulating that the
project must ‘improve the High Street’. This is one-off funding and is available for
delivery between 1 April 2024 and 31 March 2025.
An
initial list of viable sites was investigated to determine
suitability of installing heavy-duty planters to prevent or slow
down the theft of the ATM, by ram raid by vehicle. The planters
will be filled and maintained by the local community beyond
installation by way of a community project with a written agreement
in place to this effect.
In
March 2024, Cabinet agreed:
Cabinet printed decision- Item 6- 12 March 2024
a) to
progress work, from 1 April 2024, to protect the ATM identified at
the Co-op in School Lane, Cambourne, and
b) to delegate to the Head of Transformation, HR and Corporate
Services, in consultation with the Lead Member for Communities,
decisions to proceed with increasing protection to ATM following
assessment of additional sites within the approved budget, ensuring
local district councillors and parish/town councils have been
engaged.
An
additional list of sites has now been assessed and the two sites
that will progress are:
Tesco - 30 High St, Histon, Cambridge CB24 9JD (External ATM
machine)
Coop -
3 High St, Longstanton, Cambridge CB24 3BT (Internal ATM
machine)
The full list of sites has been reviewed by the Lead Member for
Communities who is in agreement that
only the two selected sites are viable. Reasons for discounting
other sites on the list of additional sites include a lack of space
(narrow footways) and suitability for the installation (planters
may have inhibited accessibility or required costly alterations to
road layout). Relevant local district councillors and town/parish
councils have been engaged for each site.
