Adoption of the Hampshire Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy
October 27, 2026 Cabinet (Cabinet collective) Key decision In call-in window View on council websiteFull council record
Purpose
To consider the report of the Cabinet Member for Environment and Net Zero seeking approval for the adoption of the Hampshire wide Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy.
Decision
(i) To approve the adoption of the updated Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy for Hampshire.
Reasons for the decision
To ensure that a joint approach across Hampshire is delivered, focusing on compliance with regulations and improving both environmental performance and services for residents.
Alternative options considered
To not adopt the Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy for Hampshire. This would mean that Southampton would not continue to joint work with other Hampshire authorities, though would still be contractually linked through the Joint Waste Disposal contract with Portsmouth City Council and Hampshire County Council. Advantages in joint education work, joint communications campaigns and shared resources for new developments would be lost, leading to lost opportunities and the potential for higher costs for any new initiatives.
