The Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Public Protection has given approval to the reinstatement of a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) to prevent car cruises for a further three year period as detailed in the report and associated appendix.

PSPOs last for a maximum of three years, and they can only be extended following a review and further consultation. The most recent PSPO expired on 17th March 2026. A Consultation regarding its reinstatement took place between 26th March and 23rd April 2026. The proposed reinstated PSPO is set out in Appendix 1 in the report.

Alternative options considered

People representing the car cruise events have asked the Council to provide a location that can be used. Given the risks associated with dangerous driving and nuisance behaviour this isn’t an option.

Our car parks are key locations for people who wish to visit and support the local economy. Previously, car parks have become unavailable to other users when occupied by car cruises. The continuing development of the nighttime economy in Stockport has seen visitor numbers increase and makes keeping the PSPO necessary.
