Purpose

This change will:
•Ensure SDC align with the other authorities in
Gloucestershire
•Ensure consistency across Gloucestershire authorities
•Provide fair treatment to SDC employees

Decision

The Council periodically reviews its policies
and procedures to ensure alignment with financial sustainability,
fairness and sector benchmarking. A recent review of the redundancy
policy has indicated that the current redundancy payment for SDC
staff is calculated based on the employees age, length of service
and weekly pay. The weekly pay is subject to a maximum of
£700 per week. This is not the position of the other local
authorities in Gloucestershire where the weekly pay is based on the
employee’s actual weekly pay.
The proposal is to align SDC’s redundancy policy with that of
the other authorities in Gloucestershire and remove the maximum of
£700 and use the employees actual weekly pay as the pay to be
calculated in a redundancy situation. This is particularly
important in the run up to Local Government Reorganisation
following the publication of the English Devolution White Paper in
December 2024 to ensure that SDC employees are on a par with other
local government staff across the county.
