Decision required to approve works and appointed contractor at a countryside site in Weybourne. The small nature reserve is regularly frequented by dog walkers and families but in recent years the wetland site has become frequently drier. 4 quotes were requested and the preferred contractor has provided a methodology that will help restore the wetland as described in the document attached. Out of the 4 quotes requested, 2 specialist hydrology contactors responded. The preferred contractor provided the most competitive pricing and the most comprehensive methodology.

Reasons for the decision

The current condition the site not only impacts on the aesthetics of the site for the people that use it but it also has a significant negative impact on the local biodiversity. A number of species are at risk of being lost due to the drying out of the fen - a Biodiversity Action Plan key habitat. The area surrounding the site is now also susceptible to flooding.
Improving the flow and retention of water inside the site will future-proof the nature reserve and surrounding area - reducing flood risk, improving biodiversity and improving the overall look of the site.

Alternative options considered

This project is over 5 years in the making. All potential alternatives have been considered and rejected for a range of reasons including unacceptable costs and damage to the nature reserve. The current methodology aligns with the flood team at Surrey County Council's preferences as well as Giles Groom, a botanical expert who carries out ecological surveys on the site.
