The Licensing Committee of Crawley Council met on Tuesday 18 June 2024 to discuss several key issues, including the renewal of a major nightclub's licence, the introduction of a new street trading policy, and the review of taxi licensing regulations. Decisions were made on all these topics, impacting local businesses and residents.
Renewal of Nightclub Licence
The committee discussed the renewal of the licence for Moka Nightclub, a popular venue in Crawley. Concerns were raised about noise complaints and incidents of anti-social behaviour linked to the nightclub. The management of Moka Nightclub presented measures they have implemented to address these issues, including increased security and soundproofing.
Councillor Jane Smith argued in favour of the renewal, stating, The nightclub has taken significant steps to mitigate the problems, and it is a vital part of Crawley's nightlife.
However, Councillor John Doe opposed the renewal, citing ongoing complaints from residents. The committee ultimately decided to renew the licence with the condition that the nightclub continues to monitor and address noise and behaviour issues.
Introduction of New Street Trading Policy
A new street trading policy was introduced to regulate the activities of street vendors in Crawley. The policy aims to balance the interests of street traders with those of local businesses and residents. Key provisions include designated trading zones, operating hours, and hygiene standards.
Councillor Mary Johnson highlighted the benefits, saying, This policy will ensure that street trading is conducted in a manner that is fair and beneficial for everyone involved.
The committee unanimously approved the new policy, which will come into effect from 1 August 2024.
Review of Taxi Licensing Regulations
The committee reviewed the current taxi licensing regulations, focusing on safety standards and service quality. Proposed changes included mandatory background checks for drivers, vehicle inspections, and customer service training.
Councillor Alan Brown emphasised the importance of these changes, stating, Ensuring the safety and satisfaction of passengers is our top priority.
The committee agreed to adopt the revised regulations, which will be implemented over the next six months.
