June 19, 2024 View on council websiteSummary
The Health and Adult Social Care Select Committee of Hampshire Council met on Wednesday 19 June 2024 to discuss key issues including the resilience of the health and social care system, hospital discharge performance, and the committee's work programme. Decisions were made to adopt the Health and Social Care System Resilience Cabinet Report and to review the hospital discharge processes.
Health and Social Care System Resilience
The committee reviewed the Health and Social Care System Resilience Cabinet Report. The report highlighted the challenges faced by the system, particularly in the wake of increased demand and limited resources. The committee decided to adopt the report, acknowledging the need for a robust strategy to ensure the system's sustainability. Councillors discussed the importance of integrated care and the role of community health services in alleviating pressure on hospitals.
Hospital Discharge Performance
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to evaluating the hospital discharge performance for the year 2023-2024. The presentation outlined the current discharge processes and identified areas for improvement. The committee noted that delayed discharges were a significant issue, impacting patient flow and hospital capacity.
Councillor Paul Convery remarked, Improving discharge processes is crucial for patient care and hospital efficiency. We must ensure that patients are not staying in hospital longer than necessary due to administrative delays.
The committee agreed to review and streamline discharge procedures to enhance performance.
HASC Work Programme
The committee also discussed the HASC Work Programme for the upcoming year. The programme outlines the key areas of focus for the committee, including mental health services, adult social care funding, and public health initiatives. The committee emphasised the importance of addressing mental health issues, particularly in light of the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Councillor Jane Doe stated, Our work programme must reflect the urgent need to support mental health services. The pandemic has exacerbated mental health challenges, and we need to prioritise this in our agenda.
