The Families Overview and Scrutiny Committee of Gateshead Council met on Thursday 20 June 2024 to discuss several key reports and performance reviews. Decisions were made regarding the adoption of annual reports and the approval of the work programme for the upcoming year.
Year-End Performance Report 2023-24
The committee reviewed the Families OSC Year-End Performance Report 2023-24. The report highlighted significant achievements and areas needing improvement within family services. Key performance indicators showed positive trends in early intervention and support services, but concerns were raised about the timeliness of child protection assessments. The committee decided to implement additional training for social workers to address these concerns.
Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO) Annual Report 2023-24
The IRO Annual Report 2023-24 was presented, detailing the performance of the IRO service. The report noted improvements in the quality of reviews for children in care but identified a need for better engagement with young people. Councillor Paul Convery emphasised the importance of ensuring that every child's voice is heard in their review process.
The committee agreed to adopt the report and focus on enhancing youth participation.
Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) Annual Report 2023-24
The LADO Annual Report 2023-24 was discussed, highlighting the role of the LADO in managing allegations against staff and volunteers working with children. The report showed an increase in the number of referrals, which was attributed to better awareness and reporting mechanisms. The committee decided to continue supporting the LADO's efforts in training and awareness campaigns.
Corporate Parenting Board (CPB) Annual Report 2023-24
The CPB Annual Report 2023-24 was reviewed, focusing on the outcomes for children in care and care leavers. The report highlighted successes in educational attainment and stable placements but noted challenges in mental health support. The committee resolved to work closely with health services to improve mental health provisions for care leavers.
Work Programme for 2024-25
The committee approved the Work Programme for 2024-25, which outlines the key areas of focus for the upcoming year. The programme includes continued scrutiny of family services, with a particular emphasis on early intervention, mental health support, and youth engagement. Councillor Convery stated, Our work programme reflects our commitment to improving outcomes for families and children in Gateshead.
