The Council of Wandsworth Council met on Wednesday 24 May 2023, electing Councillor Juliana Annan as the new Mayor and appointing Councillor Jafri as Deputy Mayor. The meeting also saw the confirmation of the Leader and Deputy Leader of the Opposition, and the adoption of recommendations for committee appointments and representative roles.
Election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor
Councillor Juliana Annan was elected as the Mayor of the London Borough of Wandsworth for the ensuing municipal year. Councillor Annan read and signed her declaration of acceptance of office and took the Chair for the remainder of the meeting. She announced her appointments for the year, including Ms Victoria Asante as Mayor's Consort and Pastor Fred Asafo-Adjei as Mayor's Chaplain. Councillor Jafri was appointed as Deputy Mayor for the 2023/24 Municipal Year, with Ismat Jafri and Musayab Ali Jafri serving as Deputy Mayor's Consorts.
Leadership Appointments
The Council noted the appointment of Councillor Kemi Akinola as Deputy Leader of the Council. Councillor Will Sweet was appointed as Leader of the Opposition, and Councillor Mrs. Kim Caddy as Deputy Leader of the Opposition.
Committee and Representative Appointments
The Council adopted recommendations for the appointment of committees and representatives. These appointments are detailed in Paper No. 23-153 and Paper No. 23-154 respectively.
Mayor's Announcements
The Mayor paid tribute to the outgoing Mayor, Councillor Jeremy Ambache. Apologies for absence were received from several councillors. The Mayor announced that the projects she would be supporting for 2023/24 are Black Mind Matters, Katherine Low Settlement, and Keeping Families Together.
The minutes of the previous meeting held on 8th March 2023 were confirmed and signed as a correct record.
