Open Council Network is an independent organisation. We report on Stockport and are not the council. About us
The Werneth Area Committee met on Monday 27 July 2026, discussing neighbourhood policing, community funding, and traffic regulation orders. Key decisions included approving funding for the Romiley Bowling & Petanque Club and the Stockport Normandy Veterans Legacy, while refusing funding for Social Events Activities (SEA). The committee also noted a report on planning appeal and enforcement matters and discussed proposed traffic regulation orders for Hill Rise, Romiley, and Ashton Street, South View, and Peart Avenue, Woodley.
Neighbourhood Policing
Inspector Jacqui Prest of Greater Manchester Police attended the meeting to provide an update on neighbourhood policing. She reported that every district now has a dedicated Neighbourhood Officer. The first Police and Communities Together (PACT) meeting in Romiley was well-attended and described as challenging
. Crime statistics for Woodley showed a reduction in shoplifting and an increase in reporting, for which residents and partner agencies were thanked. In Romiley, however, there was an increase in shoplifting offences, prompting requests for similar actions seen in Woodley, including the use of the mobile police station. Action was being taken at Romiley precinct, including increased police attendance and closer collaboration with supermarkets, and the public was encouraged to report suspected illicit sales of commonly shoplifted items.
A public question was raised regarding speeding on Sandy Lane. Inspector Prest stated that action would be taken before the next meeting. Concerns were also raised about a disused church on George Lane being repeatedly broken into. It was reported that four of the five children involved had been taken home to their parents, with a positive outcome for the fifth. Councillors were advised to pressure the building's owner regarding future plans. The issue of cars racing along Bents Lane was also discussed, with police indicating they would investigate and consider deploying a high-powered vehicle to deter such activity. The committee resolved to thank Inspector Prest for her attendance and update.
Community Funding Applications
The committee considered several applications for Ward Flexibility Funding.
- Woodley & Bredbury Community Neighbours (WBCN) received approval for a £1,000 grant. This funding will support an all-day community event, the maintenance of two defibrillators in Woodley Precinct, Police & Community Together meetings, restocking litter-picking equipment, and awarding a dedicated litter picker.
- Social Events Activities (SEA) had their application for £250 refused. This funding was intended to support their
Seniors Connections
sessions, aimed at combating loneliness and isolation among older residents in Stockport. - Stockport Normandy Veterans Legacy was granted £100. This funding will be used to create a piece of artwork with accompanying information boards as a tribute to their memory.
Traffic Regulation Orders
Two proposed Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) were discussed and approved for legal advertising.
- Hill Rise, Romiley: Approval was given for the legal advertising of a 'No Waiting At Any Time' TRO on Hill Rise, Romiley. The cost of £1,100 will be funded by the Bredbury Green & Romiley Delegated Ward Budget. The order can be made if no objections are received within 21 days of the advertisement date.
- Ashton Street, South View and Peart Avenue, Woodley: Approval was given for the legal advertising of 'No Waiting At Any Time' TROs on Ashton Street, South View, and Peart Avenue, Woodley. The cost of £1,250 will be funded by the Bredbury & Woodley Delegated Ward Budget. The order can be made if no objections are received within 21 days of the advertisement date. Specific restrictions include 'No Waiting At Any Time' on the northeast side of Ashton Street, both sides of South View, the southwest side of South View, and both sides of Peart Avenue.
Planning Appeal, Enforcement Appeals and Enforcement Notices
A report detailing outstanding or recently determined planning appeals and enforcements within the Werneth Area Committee area was noted by the committee. The report highlighted a current appeal relating to the land off Hillside Road, Woodley, concerning the erection of nine dwellings. Residents had been informed of their opportunity to make representations to the Planning Inspector.
Progress on Area Committee Decisions
The committee received a report providing an update on progress since the last meeting regarding decisions taken by the Area Committee and the current position on area flexibility funding and the highway and traffic management delegated budget. Members requested an update on 'Quiet Lane' signage on Vale Road, following concerns raised by local residents. The Chief Governance Officer was requested to provide this update. The report was noted.
