The North West Leicestershire District Council met on Monday 8 June 2026 to discuss a range of items, including updates on capital projects and appointments to various committees and outside bodies. The meeting's agenda also included a report on the Moira Furnace Visitor Experience Improvement Programme.

Capital Update

The council was scheduled to consider an update on the capital programme, presented by Councillor Keith Merrie MBE, Finance and Corporate Portfolio Holder. This report focused on the Moira Furnace Visitor Experience Improvement Programme (Phase Two). The programme aims to regenerate sites within North West Leicestershire and is a key priority within the Districtwide Regeneration Framework 2024. Phase Two of the Moira Furnace project proposes significant improvements, including the construction of a new operational and storage facility for the Trust, a new visitor centre with catering and toilet facilities, and enhancements to site access, roadways, and parking. The report indicated that the estimated cost for Phase Two, covering consultancy fees and construction over the next two years, would be £2,455,000, funded from the Business Rates Reserve. The report highlighted that the project aligns with council priorities for planning and regeneration, and aims to create new visitor economy facilities for economic and social regeneration, as well as environmental improvements such as tree planting and EV charging points.

Appointments to Committees and Outside Bodies

The council was also scheduled to discuss appointments to committees and outside bodies, with a report presented by Councillor Nick Rushton, Infrastructure Portfolio Holder. This included a proposed amendment to the appointment of Councillor D Everitt to replace Councillor A Wilson on the Audit and Governance Committee for the remainder of the 2026/27 civic year, following a request from the Labour Group. Additionally, the council was to consider an appointment to the Cliffe Hill Quarry Liaison Committee, as a request had been received from the committee for continued representation from the council. The report noted that nominations for this outside body would be circulated at the meeting. The report indicated that these appointments are in line with the Local Government and Housing Act 1989 and the council's constitution, and aim to ensure appropriate representation and governance.

Community Governance Review - Draft Recommendations

A report from the Interim Head of Legal and Support Services concerning draft recommendations for a Community Governance Review was scheduled to be presented. The details of this report were to follow.

Other Business

The agenda also included standard procedural items such as prayers, apologies for absence, declarations of interest, Chairman's and Leader's announcements, and a question and answer session for both the public and councillors.
