November 3, 2026 View on council websiteSummary
Open Council Network is an independent organisation. We report on East Riding of Yorkshire and are not the council. About us
The Health, Care and Wellbeing Overview and Scrutiny Sub-Committee is scheduled to discuss obesity and smoking and vaping. The meeting will also review the Sub-Committee's work programme for the upcoming year.
Obesity
The Sub-Committee is scheduled to receive a report on obesity trends in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The report is expected to cover obesity levels in both children and adults, with particular attention to trends observed between reception and Year 6 children, and the prevalence of adult obesity compared to national figures. It will also detail the support available for adults and young people, including programmes like Xyla's healthier futures East Riding and East Riding leisure programmes. The report is anticipated to discuss the more than weight
framework adopted by the Council, which aims to address obesity as part of a broader approach to health improvement and wellbeing, considering factors such as physical activity, diet, mental wellbeing, deprivation, and local environments. The report will also touch upon the psychological, environmental, and commercial drivers influencing weight, and the funding context for healthy lifestyle support.
Smoking and Vaping
A report is scheduled to be presented concerning smoking and vaping levels and trends within the East Riding, with a specific focus on children and young people. This report will likely outline the current prevalence of smoking and vaping, noting the decline in adult smoking rates while acknowledging the rise in vaping, particularly among younger demographics. It is expected to discuss the challenges posed by emerging products like nicotine pouches and the illicit trade in tobacco and vaping products. The report will also detail the access to smoking and vaping cessation support, including the limitations of current funding for vaping cessation services. Furthermore, the report is anticipated to explore the links between long-term smoking and vaping and future health outcomes, as well as workforce implications and the financial context of these issues. The report will also cover how the voices of individuals are being incorporated into the design of services and performance analytics from the past year.
