The Licensing Sub-Committee of Southwark Council met on Tuesday 21 May 2024 to consider an application for a premises licence for The Tankard pub. The committee granted the licence with a comprehensive set of conditions after representations from objectors were withdrawn.

The Tankard Premises Licence Application

The Licensing Sub-Committee granted a premises licence to Walworth Arms Limited for The Tankard, located at 176-178 Walworth Road, London SE17 1JL. The licence allows for the supply of alcohol for consumption on and off the premises, provision of late-night refreshment, and regulated entertainment, including live and recorded music and dance performances.

The decision was made after the applicant, who has extensive experience in the pub industry and as a nurse, agreed to all conditions proposed by the licensing authority and the Metropolitan Police Service. These conditions include requirements for CCTV coverage, ongoing risk assessments for door supervisors, clear signage for emergency exits, maintenance of first aid equipment and accident books, and strict protocols for waste management and noise control. The applicant also agreed to reduce operating hours and remove external speakers.

Initially, one objector had raised concerns regarding public nuisance. However, after discussions and clarification on the Live Music Act 2003¹, this objector withdrew their representation, stating they considered the premises to be well-run. The sub-committee noted that the proposed hours were less than those previously granted to the pub, which has a history dating back to the 1860s, and were largely in line with Southwark's Statement of Licensing Policy 2021-2026².

Councillor Renata Hamvas, Chair of the Licensing Sub-Committee, noted that all objectors had withdrawn their representations and that the agreed conditions would mitigate concerns and promote the licensing objectives. The sub-committee recommended that the premises make a contact number available for local residents to address any potential issues. The applicant has the right to appeal any conditions imposed on the licence or decisions to exclude licensable activities.
